I started writing fiddle tunes in college, and for a while they were very weird. For good examples, see our Turtle United and even our Contranella albums. That was a little bit what it was like in music school, where you got extra points for originality. As I got older, and I think this happens with a lot of musicians, I started to have a greater appreciation for simpler, traditional music and my own compositions got more conventional you might say, as I focused more on what makes a really excellent dance tune and less on writing an unusual tune. On the Loose was the first Old-Time type tune I tried to write. I don’t remember exactly when I wrote it, but we’ve been playing it for many years with Speed the Plow, a satisfying tune to play and dance to, and a popular tune from fiddle camp.
