Kate and Rose’s is a tune I’ve loved for a long time but there were a couple of notes that made it very awkward to get from the A to the B part, and until recently I never came up with a way to modify it that would allow me to play it up to speed. I wrote Hear the Rain specifically to go with Kate and Roses, in a very unrelenting style full of triplets (the rain was especially hard that day). I did not try to make the tune fit with Dinny O’Brien’s as well as it did, that just happened accidentally. Dinny O’Brien’s is an absolute banger of a tune I picked up from the Arthouse session in Baltimore run by Richard Osban. It’s a tune written by Dinny’s son, Irish musician and composer, Paddy O’Brien, for his father.
